Since the military clash in Sudan in April 2023, the conflict has been continuing, which has resulted in humanitarian crisis. In this context, Mr. Yoichiro Ishihara (World Bank Country Manager for Sudan) and Mr. Eiji Kubo (JICA Chief Representative of Sudan) presented current local situation and their programs in Sudan. Promoting a peaceful environment is integral for reconstruction in conflict-affected societies. However, the absence of violence does not immediately result in endeavors for development because a post-conflict state often lacks a popular base of state legitimacy. This article explores how and why civilians’ perception of state legitimacy rises and declines as a result of wartime experiences on service provision.

[Seminar Report] Online Seminar on “Climate Security in Conflict Settings” was held on August 30th, 2024. As Climate Change becomes a growing concern on our daily life, in this seminar, we discussed how Climate Change was related to conflict and peacebuilding. Climate Change affects the dynamism of conflict, while conflicts also cause the deterioration of environment. In this seminar, Dr. Naoyuki Okano (Policy Researcher, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES)) and Mr. Koji Sakane (Director, GPAJ) explained the current development on Climate Security issues and discussed how we could cope with Climate Change to reduce risks of conflicts.(30/08/2024)

GPAJ Refugee Crisis Workshop (20/06/2024)
The current situation and challenges of displaced people in Myanmar was presented to understand such a global humanitarian crisis with the first-hand experience faced by the local humanitarian experts mainly in the northern region of Myanmar. After a presentation regarding the ongoing support for each sector such as humanitarian needs including food, shelter and education as well as support for civil society, participants discussed future support needs and the type of support required from the international community including Japan.
