[Seminar Report] GPAJ Online Seminar on “Sudan: Current Situation and Approaches by Development Partners” was held on September 26, 2024.

Since the military clash in Sudan in April 2023, the conflict has been continuing, which has resulted in humanitarian crisis. In this context, Mr. Yoichiro Ishihara (World Bank Country Manager for Sudan) and Mr. Eiji Kubo (JICA Chief Representative of Sudan) presented current local situation and their programs in Sudan.

Mr. Ishihara explained World Bank’s engagement in Sudan under the current situation. He walked us through operations through partnership with UN agencies and NGOs, as well as operations in neighboring countries.

 

Mr. Kubo made his presentation, explaining current humanitarian crisis, such as war, displacement, famine and floods, and JICA’s operations within Sudan, in neighboring countries and in Japan.

 

During discussions, the participants asked server issues including security measures of respective organizations, human capital investment (scholarship) under the current crisis, political prospect toward ceasefire and reconstruction, and operation of oil pipeline. The session concluded with recognition on needs for further international attention and support for Sudan toward ceasefire and peace, and reconstruction. (26/09/2024)
